Boy, haven't really had the time to fish in quite some time so decided to hit up my favorite go-to spot in Mission Bay: East of Ingraham St. Bridge. It's a well known spot to many, but often times most people are unsure as to where to go and head. My from experience, which is very little, I've found that there are some lanes you'll want to drift, starting from the bridge, and then towards fiesta island. In these lanes, you'll catch your fish. Depending on the day and tides, this has given me some successful results. Not to say that there are times where they're hard to find, but when you do, you'll get into a steady bite.
Yesterday, was almost like that. I found my lane and picked off 2 back to back. Then another here and there. But it was hard going. The wind was up, and it was quite choppy, making it hard to really stay in the right lanes the whole drift down. Ended my first sesh back with 5 spotties and a couple more missed hits. But can't complain. Nice to be back on the water...
Central Coast Roadtrip: 7/3 - 7/7

it was a long holiday weekend back in my old college town of San Luis Obispo. for the 6 years that i was there, it seems i did absolutely nothing! each time i go back, i find something new to do, or some new place to go. my list grows of things i did, and more things are being added to my list of things to do. just off the top of my head:
things i've done:
things to do:
this report is of items 4 and 5 of the things i've done...
poke pole and shore rockfish fishing. yessir, picking up rockfish from shore and some MFE (monkey face eels). i heard of this type of fishing just recently, saw some videos and was super excited to try it out! with some help and tips from jscrib and cphwt, i was certain we'd catch something! so, decided to hit up MDO for some shore rockfish fishing.
as you can see, there were so many pockets of kelp with deeper water nearby. we threw 4" and 3" big hammers for nothing! all morning. every place we tried looked super fishy! but alas, we were skunked. decided to move on to another place hoping to get bit. decided to hit up spooners cove just up the road.
arrived at spooners cove and saw a few kayakers fishing the kelp beds just outside the cove, with a bunch of shore fisherman along the rocks. but again, no bites! i guess today just wasn't our day...packed it up and headed home.
next day we decided to try something a little bit different. some cliff fishing! went over to shell beach in pismo to fish the cliffs for some rock fish again. saw a couple other people fishing some nearby spots.
i wish i had taken a shot looking down, because we were literally on a cliff with at least a 50 foot drop into the abyss! crazy scary! we soaked some squid and smelt for 1 bite, and moved around for a bit. but again, no hookups. we left the salt stinking of skunk and decided to try to wash it off by fishing the fresh. off to santa margarita lake we go!
everyplace looked fishy as well! had a muck on the top near shore, so we frogged it up a bit. got 1 blow up on the frog, but that was it. threw the whole tacklebox trying to find the pattern, then my buddy got hooked up on a crawdad. he farmed it right near shore, but at least we knew the pattern now. i too hooked but lost it as well near shore. my buddy once again farmed another one near shore, and with that we called it a day. 2 days full of skunk! man, my confidence in my fishing ability plummeted. i contemplated not fishing anymore that weekend, but my buddy was pumped to fish even more! fishing karma he said, me, i was skeptical.
the next day we decided to hit up the fresh again, since the salt just took too much work. maybe next time i told myself. off to lake lopez for us! rented a skiff for the remaining 3 hours of the marina store hours. last time i was here, all i had caught was 1 smallie. my buddy had picked up 3 crappie, but that was it. this time though, we got some local intel, so we hit up those spots first.
first couple places we hit up, we saw some busting shad but no big fishes. motored around a bit, trying to find the pattern of the day. it was until we found some stickups under water, that my buddy struck first!
with that, i tie on a white grub as well, and i hook into my first fish of the trip!
we decided to beach the boat and work that shoreline where we were getting bit. good thing, because we got into a really good bite!
FINALLY! it felt good to finally rinse off the skunk. couple full days of fishing and no fish; then 20+ crappie, 10+ lmb, and 2 smallies later. i guess fishing karma?! twas a good day, and we brought home a couple crappie to boot. this trip turned out to be all for not!
next couple days were spent doing some sight seeing and other activities with the gf, but i'd also done some scouting for my next trip back! heheh....things to do...
can't wait to go back to the central coast! hanapa'a!
things i've done:
- surf fish pismo beach, avila beach, MDO (PB perch caught here), morro bay, cayucos
- 4-wheel drive Oceano Dunes
- freshwater fishing at lake lopez and santa margarita lake
- poke pole fishing at MDO
- shore rockfishing at MDO and Shell Beach
things to do:

I do 90% of my fishing from shore. I've walked miles and miles of sand and rock, just to get to my spots and do some fishing. It's always a treat to fish from someones boat, or rent a skiff to do some "new" fishing, and hitting new spots that are just not possible to reach while shore fishing. That's why I've been in the market for a boat for quite a while. However, without a true "garage" or storage space, it's been extremely difficult to justify buying a boat at this time. So, I've been tossing around the idea of owning a kayak or a tube.
Both a kayak and a tube have their pros and cons. While one may take less effort in getting somewhere, another may allow for tighter space fishing. It wasn't until I saw a deal on craiglist for a kayak selling for less than $300 that I took the plunge and purchased my first kayak!
I spent a great deal of time (and some extra money), to outfit my new kayak with a few upgrades. (Will update with photos) I've added an anchor trolley, to help with boat positioning on windy or strong current days, I've built and added a crate rode holder, I've also bought a new seat, with higher back support, and I've also put in a fancy fish finder. I've got to say, this is probably the most complete fishing tool, aside from an actual fishing boat, that I've used! Comfortable, with all the storage you'd need, it gets me to the fish, and allows me to catch those fish! Here are some of my catches of my recent outings with my new kayak.
Some LMB in our local lakes!
SD Bay and Mission Bay! Hali/Corvina/grumps!
I'm extremely happy with my purchase! I've read some poor reviews on the Pelican Castway 116 DLX, but with all the upgrades I've done (homemade btw), I couldn't be any happier. So far I've logged more than 30+ SBB, a couple halis (I think I caught a legal as well, reminder bring put a tape measure sticker on the yak), a couple corvina, mackerel, and few LMB in just a few outings.
Owning a kayak has opened a whole new world of fishing possibilities for me, and I can't wait to explore further!
lake murray - my new nemesis

if i had a nemesis lake, it'd be murray. hands down, with out a question, this lake has frustrated me to no end. i used to live maybe 10 minutes away from this lake, and have tried my luck here before. every single time, probably 4 or 5 outings now, i have come out of that place smelling like skunk. i've thrown my whole tackle box out there, spinners/worms/cranks/topwater/etc. with nothign to show for.
now, seeing that the boards have been flooded, and i mean flooded with new personal bests from murray, i had to give it another try. so, off i went with my gf.
started off tossing some worms out into some of the lakes nearby arms. bleh, the lake was just breaming with weeds, EVERYWHERE. the bait could not settle down, unless you found a pocket in that huge mess. i decided to move on to different waters, looking for some tules or open water. i made my way to the power lines, and spotted a few tules. started flipping my weightless senko right into or near the tules. did the same to some other bunches of tules, until i made it just past the power lines. threw in my senko once again to slack line. this time tho, once my line dropped in, it kept dropping. there was no way the water was more than 2 ft deep, but it seemed like my line kept on dropping. at that instant, and started reeling, and what do you know, fish on!
well, murray's still my nemesis lake, but i've got 1 fish out fo here! stoked, and can't wait to get back out there.

Sutherland - 6/15

Sutherlands been kind of my 2nd go to lake in SD county. Just after Miramar. Mainly because shore access is limitless. You can literally walk the entire lakes perimeter, if you've got the time. And, the fishings usually been pretty decent. My last outing on 5/31, we nailed a bunch of nice crappie and at my usual spot, i caught a couple bass. Pics from previous sutherland days.
Decided to hit up Sutherland Saturday morning, but got there pretty late. arrived around 10:30 am to a slight wind, but otherwise nice day. picked off a nice bass early on in the usual spot near the big rock on a crank bait.
we also soaked for some carp with a hair rig, using corn as bait. pbag pulled in a nice carp while we were fishing for crappie.

unfortunately, thats all we caught. no bites for crappie, no other bass, just nothing else. we walked around the lake, hit up a bunch of different spots, and ended up on the docks with still no biters. everyone we've talked to also didn't catch much. we heard from the boaters that most of the crappie were out in deeper water, and much of the bass being caught were near the dam.
left at closing, as the bite actually turned on once the sun started setting.

i had written up a long report, sprawled with my epic story of catching this beast. but, decided to cut it out, as most people only like looking at pictures. and i also started rambling off topic....
well without further adieu, my personal best LMB caught in our fine SD lakes!
caught on a brown 4.5" roboworm using my 7'6" ML/MF shimano compre on 6lb test! finesse style ftw! i was trying out some new rigs and decided to throw this finesse rig, and started jigging it around some points. hooked up to a smaller one at first, and thought, man this thing works! then after a few more cast, thought i got stuck on some rocks. gave it a tug, and it started tugging back! started reeling it in a bit, and it surfaced and jumped out of the water! once i saw it out of the water, MAN! my heart started pumpin! i fought her real nice and slow, knowing that i only had 6lb test line on. she kept giving some good hard runs, almost like my PB hali (33 incher). what got me more afraid was when she buried herself in some grass. on my ML setup, i thought for sure she was a gonner...but she came out and i surfaced her and eased her in. lipped and landed her! i took the hook out with ease, and damn lucky she didn't do another aerial show as for sure she wouldve shooken the hook out. took a few pics and set her free. she splashed her way back and swam away strong. man, she was a beast!!! i could literally fit my whole fist in her mouth.

...*sigh*...
home....home is where the heart is, and will always be. kauai is my home, and it beckons me everyday to return to her. its been 2 years since i last was there, and i was due to go back. living here in the mainland has made me, restless. impatient, unkind, and just downright grumpy, i had forgotten what the spirit of aloha was. my little fishing adventures out here has always reminded me of home. just the good times hanging out and fishing with friends and family in the beauty of the islands. so when my friend from college invited me to his wedding, noting especially to me that it was on kauai, i jumped at the excuse, no chance, at leaving work and the hustle and bustle of city life.
one good thing about kauai, it hardly ever changes; the two lane roads with a max speed limit of 50mph, no ones ever in a rush to go anywhere. or the toyota pickup trucks, with their poles and boards in the bed, ready for an pre/after work fishing or surfing sesh. and the frequent, "howzit bradah", and *shaka*, from friends and strangers alike. *sigh*...oh how i've missed you.
but i digress, on to the fishing adventures...
i already had a packed schedule, being that i was the only local of our group going to the wedding, and they wanted me to show them around to the "local" spots. i had planned my fishing adventures around the days activities; in hopes of hitting the surf, ocean, and the fresh. i was going to make it a point, to take out time to fish AND catch a fish at all locales.
upon arrival into kauai, i had a quick opportunity to fish a jetty while waiting for my parents to finish work. i packed my 2 symetre reels; 1 spooled with 20lb braid with a 15lb floro leader, and my other reel spooled with 6lb mono. i knew the typical setups used in hawaii, c-rigs with a curly tail grub used for "whipping", but i wanted to test some ideas that i had after fishing here in cali. so, i started off by tossing the big hammer swimbait. doing sort of a jigging motion in hopes of enticing some willing fish. and what do you know! hooked up to my first fish of the trip.
haha! i figured these swimbaits would work, as they mimic baitfish out there really well. it just took me sometime to figure out the motion at which the fish wanted them. i got slammed a couple other times, that took me on some good runs, but that was the only fish i pulled out of the water. a good 30 min sesh, and day 1 of fishing came to a close.
on my second day, i woke up bright and early and went to the south side of the islands. i wanted to fish some cliffs/rocks for some papios and omilus, but the island had other ideas. a south swell was starting, so the waves were quite huge. dangerous to the point where i decided on fishing a small little boat harbor, protected from the swell. again, tied on the big hammer swimbait to see what was willing.
got into a pretty good bite once again on the bh, jigging it kind of like "whipping". caught a good 10 of those cornetfish (trumpet?). also lost some bh lead heads to the reefs. p.s. next time i come back, bring more lead heads (3/8 oz) and more swimbaits. they were getting trashed and i had only brought a limited supply, and the fishing stores here do not sell them. didn't see the papios, and my time was up for fishing that day. off to show my friends around.
day 3 was wedding day. no fishing planned, no fishing had.
bright and early on day 4. back to fishing. wanted to change up my presentation so decided on throwing the mark white lure in oama color, 1/2 oz.
started tossing out the mw lure, with a fast retrieve for a bit. got a couple hits, and finally hooked up!
had a couple other missed strikes, but the rains came and cut my morning session short. my phone also took a dunk in the water, so the following few photos were taken with my work phone. boo to bringing work on vacay...
spent the rest of the day showing my friends around the island again. once that was over, and on my way home, i decided to go fish some streams behind my house.
tied on a worm with no luck. then started throwing the weightless fluke. as im working the bait, i see a flash! bam, fish on! then, he throws the hook. boo...i cast again, same place, and again he bites! but this time my lures tail is gone, and the bite stops. i call it a day with a stripe in the fresh. i'll be back, i told myself. i'll get you soon enough.
day 5 was ocean day. i hit up my buddy before leaving cali, and asked if he could take me out on his boat. he was more than obliging. took a late morning start, but man, was it a beautiful day.
made a bunch of passes near the birds and started hooking up left and right on aku! ended the day with 24 aku (skipjack tuna) and 2 koshibi (yellowfin tuna).
all in all, a damn good day if you ask me! awesome time out in the water, and some ono'lecious grindz!
my last day in hawaii, i had to leave at 1pm. i had one more thing to do. finish and check off my freshwater fish that i missed. returned back to the same spot, and rigged with a small curly tail grub. hooked up to a good size fish, but lost him again. then moved to another spot.
starting tossing out the grub in the stained water, and thought i had snagged the bottom. then, i see the line moving! hana'pa!!! fought the fish for a bit, and brought her up.
last item checked off my list, satisfied and well fished out, i headed off to the airport. as i looked back on my trip back to kauai, my home, i can't believe i left her. but, she always welcomes me back with open arms. life in hawaii is the good life. saw some friends and family, ate some good food, and did some fishing. man, i can't wait to go back home again...
hanapa'a!!!

looks relatively flat, but when the sets came in, they were crashing on the rocks!
another cornetfish!

took my friends to one of my favorite beaches on the island. secret beach.
day 3 was wedding day. no fishing planned, no fishing had.
na aina kai. wedding locale.
some pupus being served before dinner!
man, i wish i brought my pole to the wedding!
bright and early on day 4. back to fishing. wanted to change up my presentation so decided on throwing the mark white lure in oama color, 1/2 oz.

made it out about 10 miles off the coast to a buoy, and started trolling our jig lines. many birds out crashing on baitfish.
made a bunch of passes near the birds and started hooking up left and right on aku! ended the day with 24 aku (skipjack tuna) and 2 koshibi (yellowfin tuna).
twas a good day!
brought home 2 aku and 1 koshibi for the fam to sashimi and whatnot.
aku poke!
